Now, this is what I call a fashion week done right, folks! Compared to the disastrous London Fashion Week FW19, the one in Milan is what fashion is and should be all about! There were so many great looks, details and shows, that I was literally skipping some. Otherwise, you’d have to read not highlights but a full report on Milan Fashion Week FW19! Although I really enjoyed watching the designers and their collections, this fashion week wasn’t just about fashion. I would be surprised if you’ve somehow missed this but it was Karl Lagerfeld’s last Fendi collection. I was truly shocked the day I found out that he passed away. Don’t know why but it really affected me. He was not only a designer but an artist. People who laugh at fashion don’t realise how important it is. Fashion is not only about clothes. Fashion is a way of expressing your views and emotions. Karl Lagerfeld was very provocative and forward-thinking – a true genius. The world and the fashion industry will always remember him.
Thus, I’m going to dedicate these Milan Fashion Week FW19 highlights to Karl Lagerfeld. I hope you enjoy them and the gallery with my favourite looks! Also, don’t forget that you can shop all fall collections at FarFetch, MartchesFashion and StyleBop!
Milan Fashion Week FW19 Highlights
- Gucci’s Fall collection was as always full of details. The outfits were designed with sharp shoulders, nipped waists and raw edges, with many of the pieces being unfinished.
- At Milan Fashion Week FW19, Arbesser showcased a lot of pomegranate and lychee-print inspired looks. Moreover, one of the lychee-print suits is an adaptation of his own tuxedo. The designer also took inspiration from the tiles in his restroom to design pleated check skirts, mohair tank tops and scarves.
- Winning eveningwear head-turners at Alberta Ferretti’s show. The collection featured not only ’80s-redolent blouses and wide-leg pants in silver and gold lamé, but also black minidresses in plumetis and lace.
- For his Fall collection at Milan Fashion Week, Cucinelli kept his pieces in the monochrome palette. Most of his looks were in white to beige and black. Actually, the only exceptions were corduroy pants in chestnut colour, leathers and the handmade sweaters.
- There was a lot of boss tailoring at Max Mara. Designed for the working woman, the collection featured full, pleated pants or skirts, topped by matching coats in camel, charcoal or light brown colours.
- A lot of silk-jacquard floral dresses and graphic silhouettes at Emporio Armani FW19 collection. Moreover, waistbands, shoulders, hems were cut in washed denim.
- Karl Lagerfeld’s last Fendi collection was, of course, emotional. The collection included the stiff, high Edwardian collars that Lagerfeld himself wore alongside scissor-sharp tailoring with geometric seams. There was also laser-perforated “fishnet” leather. The show ended with an emotional video of Mr Lagerfeld, speaking of the inspiration behind his designs. Although it was all over social media, if you’ve somehow missed it, please watch it!
- At Milan Fashion Week FW19 Prada presented yet again another collection full of romance. There were lace, flowers, hearts and glittery red shoes. The collection also featured off-the-shoulder party dresses, skirts with massive patch pockets and military jackets.
- The usual animal and tropical prints were present at Cavalli’s Fall collection. There were also a lot of hand-written logos and embroidered “just” wording on the chest of mohair sweaters. The denim, on the other hand, was sexy and distressed.
- A lot of cashmere looks at Kiton’s fall collection. There were also fuchsia-accented evening suits, white double-breasted jackets and mini caban clothing.
- Tod’s, as usual, presented a lot of leather looks at Milan Fashion Week FW19. The collection was full of fitted glove-leather blazers, trapeze-cut nappa leather dresses and boxy T-shirts in nude colours.
- Speaking of leather, there was plenty of it at Bottega Veneta. There was not only a black leather tank dress cut but also plenty of biker jackets and asymmetrical double-layered knits.
- There were also short, black, taffeta-ruffled pannier skirts topped by fitted, cropped, leopard-print jackets at Blumarine’s show.
- Impressive round-shouldered outerwear pieces in a wool-cashmere mix were a hit in Sportmax’s Fall collection. There were also bombers, full-length jackets and raincoats with integrated jerkin-like leather inserts.
- At Milan Fashion Week FW19, Etro presented its usual print/pattern mash-ups alongside jet beading and gold-thread embroidery on capes. Moreover, long evening dresses were overlaid with caviar-beaded lace. On the other hand, the tiny cocktail dresses were strongly strapped and loosely corseted up the back.
- Although the runway was a masterpiece on its own, Donatella once again showcased her Italian masterwork. Her Versace looks featured oversized safety pins and bondage harnesses. Moreover, alongside the sexy black dresses, designed for goddesses, certain outfits channelled the grunge spirit. One of them being a V-print minidress over a ribbed-knit sweater and lace tights.
- Sparkly rib knits in tricolour pastel at Ermanno Scervino. There were also plenty of semi-sheer slip dresses and finely made suiting pieces.
