Cartier has always been associated with royals and high-class elites. Although the company started with its high-quality watches, nowadays the majority of Cartier buyers have been going crazy for the Cartier Love collections. More precisely, the brilliant (and very expensive!) Love bracelets and rings. Many celebrities have been ‘locked’ into the bangles. Cartier: Background & History
Société Cartier, or simply Cartier, is a French luxury goods conglomerate company which designs, manufactures, distributes, and sells jewellery and watches. It was founded in Paris, France, in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier. The company remained under family control until 1964. Cartier has been associated with a long history of sales to royalty. As a matter of fact, King Edward VII of England referred to Cartier as “the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers.”
In 1874, Louis-François’ son Alfred Cartier took over the company. However, it was Alfred’s sons – Louis, Pierre and Jacques – who established the brand name worldwide. In the early 1900s, Cartier designed a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. It was named the “Santos” and it was Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch. The design was inspired by the Brazilian pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont. He complained to his friend Louis Cartier of the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying.
In 1907, Cartier signed a contract with Edmond Jaeger, who agreed to exclusively supply the movements for Cartier watches. By this time, Cartier was quickly becoming one of the most successful watch companies in the world. Following its success, Cartier formed a joint company with Edward Jaeger (of Jaeger-LeCoultre) in the early 1920s to produce movements solely for Cartier. Furthermore, it was also during this period that Cartier began adding its own reference numbers to the watches it sold, usually by stamping a four-digit code on the underside of a lug.
After the death of Pierre in 1964, Jean-Jacques Cartier (Jacques’s son), Claude Cartier (Louis’s son), and Marionne Claudelle (Pierre’s daughter) — who respectively headed the Cartier affiliates in London, New York and Paris — sold the businesses. In 1972, a group of investors led by Joseph Kanoui bought Cartier Paris. President Robert Hocq, who created the phrase “Les Must de Cartier”, with Alain Dominique Perrin, General Director, began introducing new products. In 1974 and 1976 respectively, the group repurchased Cartier London and Cartier New York. Moreover, Cartier merged in 1981 with “Les Must de Cartier” and Perrin was appointed Chairman of Cartier SAA and Cartier International.
In 1986, the French Ministry for Culture appointed Perrin head of a commission to study business patronage of the arts. Following the accidental death of Robert Hocq in December 1994, his sister, Brigitte Hocq, became Chairman while Joseph Kanoui became Vice President of Cartier Monde. In 2012, Cartier was owned, through Richemont, by the South African Rupert family, and Elle Pagels – a 24-year-old granddaughter of Pierre Cartier.
Cartier: The Story Behind The Love Bracelet
The famous Cartier Love bracelet was the creation of an Italian jewellery designer Aldo Cipullo. It was designed in 1969 in New York City. The bracelet quickly became a must-have item for the city’s elite. As a matter of fact, Cartier first presented the Love bracelets to 25 couples at a ceremony in New York. Some of the couples included Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti, and ill-fated romantics Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It is said that the wristlet was inspired by the chastity belt. It was believed that the chastity belt was a device which husbands would lock around their wives’ waist to ensure their fidelity whilst they were away.
Nowadays, this thought might make you wince slightly and put you straight into a feminist mode. Gladly, the Cartier Love bracelet is similar to the belt in more of a metaphorical way. Moreover, it symbolises an everlasting love. The bracelet’s unique charm lies in its locking mechanism. Rather than slipping onto your wrist, two C-shaped halves unhinge to clasp together before being screwed on with a miniature screwdriver included with each bracelet. You can also buy a screwdriver necklace. It has been said that the bracelets are so popular in New York that some hospitals keep Cartier screwdrivers so that they can remove the bracelets quickly in an emergency. By using this locking mechanism, Aldo Cipullo reinforced the idea that love is not to be taken lightly. He even said in an interview at the time: “What modern people want are love symbols that look semi-permanent – or, at least, require a trick to remove. After all, love symbols should suggest an everlasting quality.”
Initially, you were only allowed to buy the Cartier Love bracelet as a gift for a loved one. Nowadays, we’re in an age of ‘self-love’ (and self-gifting), thus this rule has been abandoned. Today’s Love bracelets hew close to Cipullo’s original design, but innovations were necessary as the piece rose to fame. Just look at Kylie Jenner and her stack of Cartier Love bracelets, costing at least $40,000.
